[04:46.59]For centuries the Atlantic Ocean prevented the people of Europe from discovering America.
[04:58.37]The Atlantic Ocean is only half as big as the Pacific,
[05:06.55]but it is still very large.
[05:11.04]It is more than 6 400 km 4 wide where Columbus crossed it.
[05:21.44]Even at its narrowest it is about 3 200 kmwide.
[05:30.42]Two things make the Atlantic Ocean rather unusual.
[05:38.52]For so large an ocean it has very few islands.
[05:46.80]Also,it is the world's saltiest ocean.
[05:53.38]There is so much water in the Atlantic that it is hard to imagine how much there is.
