New Year’s Day is, of course, the first day of the year. It is a national holiday in most countries around the world. It is a time when families get together and celebrate with a meal. Many people make new plansfor the rest of the year. These plans are called New Year resolutions. People decide to lose weight, get fit, stop smoking, study English every day or save lots of money. I think most people are serious about these plans on January 1st, but then forget about them before the end of the week. Then one year later, it’sNew Year’s Day all over again and people make the same resolutions again. I guess people all around the world make the same kinds of plans. I guess they also break their resolutions at the same time.
新年当然是一年的第一天。在全世界的许多国家，新年都是全国性的假日。家人在这一天团聚，享用美味佳肴。许多人在这一天会制定全年计划。人们把这些计划称之为新年愿望。人们下决心要减肥、强壮体魄、戒烟、每天学习英语或是存钱。我认为许多人都在这一天制定了认真的计划，但是新年第一周还没有结束，大部分人就忘得差不多了。一年之后又是新年，人们又制定了与前年一样的计划。我猜想全世界的人都有着相同的计划。他们忘记计划的时间也应该是相同的吧。

One thing I like about New Year’s Day are the TV programmes that look back at the previous year. They arelike highlights 1 shows of the news. These always remind me how lucky I am because a lot of the news is about wars, famines 2, natural disasters, plane crashes and other terrible things. The shows also look back at the lives of people who died that year. Hmmm… That all sounds a bit depressing 3 really. But then there are happier things, like the top sports and music stories. Another thing that happens on New Year’s Day is lists. The top ten movies of the year, the ten best sporting achievements of the year, etc. There is even a list for the top ten new English words of the year. Previous winners of this are the words ‘blog’ and ‘podcast’.
我最喜欢新年的电视节目，因为这一天的电视节目会回顾上一年的事件。它们就像是重点新闻重现一样。看到这些节目时，我感到非常幸运，因为这些新闻都是关于战争、饥荒、自然灾害、飞机失事以及其他灾难性事件。节目还带我们回顾了这一年所牺牲的人们。恩，这些听起来非常难过。但是这一年也发生了许多振奋人心的好事，例如体育和音乐新闻。新年这一天还会产生前年的清单，即年度十佳电影清单、十佳体育成就清单等。还有十佳新英语单词清单。去年获此殊荣的是单词“博客”以及“ 播客”。

2.natural disaster 自然灾难
You can have one in a natural disaster or get one later if you're old or unemployed 4 -- but you can't have both.
