Typhoon Usagi Death Toll 1 Rises

Heavy floods and 1)mudslides have left dozens dead and tens of thousands homeless in Southeast Asia, as torrential rains from 2)Typhoon Usagi 3)pummeled Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and the Philippines. The 4)death toll from Saturday's floods in northern Thailand has already risen to at least 74.


Mass 5)cremations for flood 6)victims in northern Thailand started Monday. Rescuers, using dogs and 7)bulldozers, continue to search for 8)survivors among the mud and 9)debris. Amid the 10)wreckage, 11)rescuers found a young boy who survived by clinging to bamboo 12)stalks for hours, after being swept away from his home.


In the worst-hit province, Phetchabun, about 300 kilometers north of Bangkok, at least 300 homes were swept away by the 13)raging waters, early Saturday. At least 1,000 people were left homeless, and more than 90 others are missing.


Sunday, Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinatwara visited the area and promised aid to the flood victims.


In the Philippines, at least two people were killed and thousands of others fled their homes as heavy rains 14)triggered floods and mudslides southern Philippines.


Heavy rains also left a wake of destruction in Laos and Vietnam. Vietnamese authorities say the rains caused millions of dollars in damage to agriculture and 15)infrastructure.
