Mount Everest Is "Conquered"This Week in HistoryEdmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay become the first to climb the world's highest mountain.
In 1953, New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Standing 1 on the border of Nepal and Tibet, Mount Everest is the world's highest mountain, rising 29,028 feet (8,847 m) above sea level. The two climbers stayed on the summit for only 15 minutes because they were low on oxygen, but while there Hillary took several photographs while Tenzing buried sweets and biscuits in the snow as a Buddhist 2 offering to the gods.
