Columbus Reaches The "New World"This Week in HistoryChristopher Columbus leads the first Europeans to sail across the Atlantic.
In 1492, Christopher Columbus led 3 ships across the Atlantic in search of a short route 1 to Asia. They first found land on an island in The Bahamas in Central America. Columbus referred to the native people living there as "Indians", believing he had actually reached "The Indies" in Asia. He continued to believe this until the end of his life.
