May 16th,1868In Washington, the US Senate fails by one vote to convict President Andrew Johnson on the first article of impeachment 1 against him. Johnson is eventually acquitted 2 on all charges prompted by his clashes with the post Civil War Congress and serves out the rest of his time in office.

And 1990Sammy Davis Jr., singer, dancer, actor and a member of the Las Vegas “Rat Pack”, dies of cancer in Los Angeles at age 64.
