September 19th, 1777In upstate New York, a turning point during the American Revolution. The Continental 1 Army defeats the British in the first of two Battles of Saratoga. American victories in both battles convince the French to aid the Revolutionary cause.
1881In New Jersey 2, President James Garfield dies of wounds inflicted 3 by an assassin two and a half months earlier. Vice 4 President Chester Arthur becomes President, serving the rest of Garfield's term in office.
1934In New York City, Bruno Hauptmann is arrested for the kidnap and murder of the infant son of aviator 5 Charles Lindbergh. Hauptmann is later convicted and executed in New Jersey for the crime, insisting to the end that he is innocent.
1995In a controversial move, The New York Times and The Washington Post publish an anti-technology manifesto 6 by The Unabomber. That leads to the arrest months later of Theodore Kaczynski for the Unabomber attacks that killed three people and wounded 23 others. And 1970"Love is all around, no need to waste it. You can have a town, why don't you take it…"The Mary Tyler Moore Show, the classic TV sitcom 7, premieres on CBS.
