September 22nd, 1776In New York, the British hang Nathan Hale as a spy during the American Revolution. Hale’s last words are said to have been“I regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”
1980Iraq Saddam Hussein invades 1 neighboring Iran the year after Tehran’s Islamic Revolution. It’s the start of a war that kills hundreds of thousands on both sides over the next 8 years.
1975The second attempt on President Gerald Ford 2’s life in less than 3 weeks, Sara Jane Moore tries to shoot Ford outside a San Francisco hotel, but misses. Moore, a political radical 3 turned FBI informant, receives life in prison.
1964“If I were a rich man.”
In New York, the musical Fiddler on the Roof, starring Zero Mostel, opens on Broadway.
And 1989“God bless America.” Also in the Big Apple, songwriter Irving Berlin dies. He was 101 years old. Among his songs: God Bless America, There’s No Business Like Show Business and White Christmas.
