A former instructor 6 at Beijing's Minzhu University has been sentenced to life in prison for promoting separatism in western China's Xinjiang and encouraging ethnic 7 Uygurs to use violence.
A court in Urumqi convicted Ilham Tohti of using a website to promote his separatist cause.
He was also accused of organizing the publication of articles inciting 8 ethnic hatred 9 by distorting the facts around a number of riots and disputes in Xinjiang and Beijing.
The sentence comes on the heels of a series of explosions which killed two people and left a number of others injured in the southeast part of Xinjiang over the weekend.
