China and the Maldives have reached an agreement on the development of the 21st Century Maritime 1 Silk Road.

Visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping met with his counterpart Abdulla Yameen on Monday.

Xi says the two countries have agreed to enhance cooperation in the fields of maritime economy, maritime security, ocean research, environment protection, and disaster prevention.

The two countries have also pledged to start some key projects that can yield quick results, at an early date.

The Maldives is the second leg of President Xi's ongoing 2 four-country Asia trip. He will visit Sri Lanka and India later.

More than 90 thousand people have been evacuated 3 and some 30 thousand vessels 4 have returned to harbor as south China issued a top alert for typhoon Kalmaegi.

A top level response is in effect in the southern provinces of Hainan and Guangdong, where some regions are still recovering from the devastation 5 wreaked 6 by super Typhoon Rammasun back in July.

Kalmaegi is forecast to land somewhere between Wuchuan in Guangdong and Wanning 7 in Hainan sometime from this morning to this early afternoon.
