cold：冷的 温度低的turkey：火鸡；大家都知道是在感恩节来吃。感恩节什么时候呢。the last Thursday of every November. 每年11月的最后一个星期四。
Cold turkey：字面来看是冷的火鸡，那到底是什么意思呢？
In English:To quit something abruptly 1. 就是马上放弃做某件事情。
"Cold turkey" is a term describing the actions of a person who gives up his habit or addiction 2 at a single moment, rather than through gradually easing the process through tapering 3 off or supplemental medication. cold turkey指的是一个人马上放弃自己的不良习惯，比如抽烟，喝酒，赌博，吸毒等，而不是通过一个循序渐进的过程来实现。
这个slang的来源是这样子：In the state of drug withdrawal 4 the addict's blood is directed to the internal organs, leaving the skin white and with goose bumps. 在戒毒时，吸毒者的血液回流到体内，这会使得皮肤变白并且出现鸡皮疙瘩。
这个状态和冷的火鸡的颜色和特征一样，于是就用cold turkey来指代突然停止某种习惯。一般这个slang和go连用，说成：go cold turkey举例：
1，比如说Lucy想减肥，但总是不成功，为什么呢？因为她是个吃货，每天都吃很多的巧克力。我们就可以说：
You'll never loose weight until you give up chocolate. And I suggest you go cold turkey.
如果你再吃巧克力，永远都不可能减肥。我建议你不要再吃了。
2. 王小二总是吸烟成瘾，这不刚吃完饭又开始抽烟，老婆很生气。王小二可是一个气管炎，于是赶紧说：
I go cold turkey now and will never smoke again.
我马上戒烟，以后再也不抽了。
