Canadian border agency stop three Afghan officers trying to cross into the country from the US. They disappeared from the US training base on Cape 3 Cod 4 for the weekend. US military officials say they are asking for asylum 5 in Canada. NPR’s Tom Bowman has more.
The three officers were apprehended 6 by Canadian authorities as they tried to cross the Rainbow Bridge which connects US and Canada. Canadian officials have no immediate 7 comment, but two American military officials said Canada was evaluating the asylum request. The three officers, a major and two captains, are among two hundred international officers taking part in a peace keeping exercise at Cape Code Base. Officials say they left a tour in Cape Code mall in Hyannis Saturday. The officers were carefully offended, the official said, posed no threat for they were not carrying weapons, it’s a second incident this month. Two Afghan police officers training at Marine 8 base in Quantico, Virginia left in a supervised trip to Georgetown. Tom Bowman, NPR News Washington.
Security has tightened 9 the White House after a man climbed the fence made in the front door, the executive mansion 10 at the Friday night. The suspect Omar Gonzalez appeared in court today. A federal judge says he will be held in custody 11 at least until October 1st. NPR report it’s not the first time Gonzalez has drawn 12 the attention of the authorities.
A federal prosecutor 13 says Omar Gonzalez was arrested in July with a sniper rifle and a map marking the White House. In August he was stopped but not arrested near the White House with a hatchet 14 in his way spent. And then Friday he jumped the fence and made all the way to the North Portico 15 door before being stopped. Prosecutors 16 say he had a holding knife in his pocket and more than 800 ammunition 17 in his car. The incident has put shut scrutiny 18 on the secret service. But president Obama says he still has confidence in the service. The president spokesman says the front door will now be locked when it isn’t in use.
Treasury 19 Secretary Jacob Lew Says the government is imposing 20 new regulations to curb 21 so-called tax inversions 22. And such practices in which corporations acquire foreign businesses and they switch their citizenship 23 outside of United States to avoid paying US taxes. Lew says the loophole, undercuts businesses that are responsibly and leave the middle class with the bill. He says the new rules which will take effect immediately mean inverting 24 will no longer make economic sense.

More apologies in the domestic violence scandal involving Baltimore Ravens 25, former running back Ray Rice. Raven’s owner Steve Bisciotti says team official should have pressed earlier to see the video that let the NFL to ban Rice. “I’m sorry that we didn’t push harder to get that tape. It seems to me that we certainly had the leverage 26 to say to Ray and his lawyer that we can’t have him play on our team until we saw that last bit of evidence”. In the news conference today Bisciotti also dismissed accusations 27 that Raven’s official pressed the NFL to be lenient 28 in punishing Rice.

The Lion King is the bestselling Broadway musical in history. It has made 7.2 billion dollars’ sales worldwide.
