Senior party official and national political advisor 1 Ling Jihua has been put under investigation 2 for "suspected serious disciplinary violations 3".
The Party's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection 4 has announced the investigation in a brief statement.
The release doesn't say in detail what Ling is accused of doing.
"Serious disciplinary violations" usually implies corruption 5.
Ling Jihua is vice-chair of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
He's also the head of the United Front Work Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.
Between 1997 and 2012, Ling Jihua served as head of the General Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.
China's top political advisor will visit Vietnam later this month.
Yu Zhengsheng, Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, will make the official visit at the invitation of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and the Fatherland Front of Vietnam.
It comes after the Chinese and Vietnamese presidents' pledged to handle maritime 6 issues through dialogue and to strengthen bilateral 7 relations.
On the sidelines of the APEC meetings in November, President Xi Jinping met with his Vietnamese counterpart Truong Tan Sang in Beijing.
