Hi, I am Carl Azuz. This is CNN studentnews. We hope you enjoy the long weekend. Our first story today is aboutinfrastructure. The fundamental system that serve city, state or country. Sothings like power plants, roads and bridges. Part of this bridge in Washingtonstate collapsed 1 last week. When a tractor trailer with oversized load hit anoverhead part of the bridge. Several vehicles fell into the water. Rescue crewshowed up to help the victims. Three people were injured. Officials estimatedthat it's going to cause 15 million dollars to fix the bridge. It's part of animportant shipping 2 route between the U.S. and Canada. Nearly 400 billiondollars in cargo 3 crosses that bridge every year. Authorities are hoping to havea temporary bridge up and a permanent bridge up in September.
Another parts in the country, people havebeen struggling through different forms of severe weather. In San Antonio,Texas, huge amounts of rain over the weekend led the flash flood. At least, three people were killed. Thousands of people lost their power. And dozens ofstreets were closed because of it. San Antonio's fire chief said on Saturday in15 hours 250 water related calls came in. Up in the northeast, it looked morelike winter than spring. This is late May. Vermont seemed to get some of the worst of this. Up to 7.5 inches of snow fell in some parts of the state. Oneconcern there is about the snowfall weighing down trees and branches. That canincrease the chance of them falling on power lines.
See, if you can ID me. I am an Americanorganization that was founded in 1910 since then I have had more than 100million members. My highest rank isEagle, and my motto is "Be Prepared." I am the boy Scott of America and I amaimed to build the character, values and fitness of young people.
Next year, it is going to be a change to aboy Scots membership policy. Starting on January first, the organization willallow who are openly gay to join. Last week, the group's national council votedfor the change. They also decided 4 to maintain the current policy of notallowing gay adult leaders. The reaction to openly gay youth to joining thescouts has been mixed. Here is what a former scout 5 leader and the former Eagle Scouthad to say about it.
This is a victory for scouting 7, this is avictory for gay youth, the youth would no longer have to hide in the closetswhen they are participating in their scout activities and with their troops. So, it gives freedom to and acceptance to gay youth in the scouting program. It¡¯s historic.
I can¡¯t in good conscience represent thescouts anymore. Because of the abandonment, that I see, of the basic values, the transcendent God-given Bible-based about guides that the Scouts 6 have beenbased on for over a century.
In Moore, Oklahoma, graduations ceremonieshappened as planned on Saturday. The town is recovering from last week¡¯sdevastating tornado 8, which was on the minds of the graduates.
We¡¯re damaged, but we survived. We¡¯re hurt, but we¡¯re resilient. We¡¯re graduating, but we¡¯re not done with our successes.
