Heavy fog has been disturbing traffic and travel on the final day of the New Year holiday. The haze caused the closure of highways in many regions. As many as eight major roads were closed in the capital, Beijing, and 10 in the neighboring city, Tianjin.
According to the National Meteorological Center, visibility was less than 500 meters in both cities. But the fog was even thicker in Hebei, Shandong and Sichuan provinces, with visibility of less than 200 meters. Meanwhile, China's weather observatory has issued a yellow alert for smog.
Residents have been warned to take protective measures outdoors, while those who suffer from respiratory problems were advised to stay indoors. However, snow and rain are expected to disperse the smog on Monday and Tuesday.
