基本词汇自测:你真的背过单词吗?

accept这个词的“接受”这一层意思为大家所熟知，但在历年真题中经常考查它的另外一层含义“承担”。例如，2006年翻译中有这样一个句子 “His function is analogous 1 to that of a judge, who must accept the obligation 2 of revealing in as obvious a matter as possible the course of reasoning which led him to his decision.” 如果在这里把accept翻译成“接受”，翻译出来的中文句子就比较别扭，因此这里accept要理解为“承担”，整个句子便可译为“知识分子的作用与法官类似，即他必须承担这样的责任：用尽可能明了的方式来揭示他做出决定的推理过程。”此外，2003年完型中也出现了这个词“This does not mean that adults must accept irresponsibility. ”既然该句中accept和irresponsibility(无责任感)搭配，因此accept同应理解为“承担”，整句话译为“这并不是说成年人不应当承担责任。”
Claim这个词大家所熟知的是“声称，宣称”这层意思，但在真题中还会考查它另外的意思。例如2010年阅读text2中的句子“The Bilski case involves a claimed patent on a method for hedging risk in the energy market.”这里claimed是claim的形容词，很明显不能理解为“声称的”，而应选用claim作为“宣告所有权，声称有权”这层意思。此外，claim出现在1999年阅读text1中的语境如下”As personal injury claims continue as before, some courts are beginning to side with defendants 3, especially in cases where a warning label probably wouldn’t have changed anything.” 这里应选用claim作为“索赔”这层意思。
通过accept和claim这两个单词在真题中的考查，同学们应该清楚了什么是基础词汇的熟词僻义考查。因此，对于这类词汇，同学们在复习中千万不可掉以轻心，不要满足于掌握它的基本释义，必须花功夫去全面掌握它的每层意思。在后期，我们会陆续给同学们列出真题中对于一些基础词汇的熟词僻义的考查。
