The town center is a fun wonder. Over the centuries, it's modernized 1 in a kind of architectural jumble 2, but it maintains a lot of its mediaeval character.

The town and the Cathedral both originated in 1220, when Old Sarum, just one and a half miles north of here was abandoned and a new city built here. Tuesdays and Saturdays are market days, with the town center throb 3bing with venders. 70 pubs guarantee a good time and good food. Salisbury is a fun getaway from London.

These day trips out of London are a snap. The big tour companies offer them, they'll take you to places like Cambridge, Windsor and Hampton Court. But you don't need to rely on them. You can do it on your own. We're doing it by train, out this morning, home tonight. Travelling on a ticket that lets you go a round trip for just a little more than what you spend one way as long as you complete the journey in one day. This is cheaper than the tours. You get to set your own tempo 5, see just what you want to see and surround youself with locals rather than other tourists.

Home-basing and day tripping is a good way to go in London. They've made it so easy for us. In fact the logistics of travel in general are getting easier all the time. For those of you who have yet to try an independent travel, confidence is half the battle. For you seasoned globetrotters, I hope you've enjoyed a few memories and picked up a few new ideas.
