In past times, and still in rural cultures today, animals have played an important role in economics. In some places, animals are more important than money as a means of barter 1. If animals are slaughtered 2 for meat, the amount of meat is important. A whole hog 3 provides a lot of meat, more than one family can eat in a week. If a generous person offers to give a gift of an entire hog to others, rather than just offering a portion of the hog's meat, it will be more than sufficient. Thus, in this idiom based upon animal economics, when people say they will "go the whole hog," their meaning is that they will commit to doing something as completely as possible, without any reservations. Several idioms with similar meanings are "go full throttle 4, go all out, pull out all the stops," and "go the whole nine yards."
