[09:19.56]Workbook Unit 12

[09:22.24]LISTENING

[09:23.29]2.Listen to the tape and answer the following questions

[09:27.27]Next turn we'll read two works of fantasy or science fiction literature in class.

[09:32.93]Today is your opportunity to tell me what you think we should read

[09:36.97]and express your opinions.

[09:38.42]Well,we have to read Harry Potter.

[09:40.33]We may,but it depends how the others feel about that.

[09:43.89]Harry Potter,by J.K. Rowling is a good example of fantasy literature.

[09:49.05]But there are other books.Such as The Lord of The Rings.

[09:52.40]Can you explain the differences

[09:53.98]between fantasy literature and science fiction?

[09:56.84]That's a very good question,Susan. Mark what do you think?

[10:00.58]Well,I think if there are things in the book which are not possible,

[10:04.55]then it's called fantasy.

[10:06.02]But travelling at the speed of light or time travel is also not possible,

[10:10.25]and that's called science fiction.

[10:12.09]You are right there, John.

[10:13.90]It's better to say that fantasy is about things

[10:16.87]that are never possible.

[10:18.49]Such as talking animals a magic.

[10:20.84]Science fiction is about things that are not possible now

[10:24.79]but perhaps possible in the future when sciences are more developed.

[10:28.57]But most science fiction are so strange.

[10:31.78]Do you really believe we'll one day be able to travel and

[10:35.75]meet aliens on other planet?

[10:37.90]People thought the same when Jules Verne wrote his books.

[10:41.37]There were no submarines when he wrote 2000 Leagues Under the Sea.

[10:45.99]And when he wrote A Journey to the Moon, many people said he was mad.

[10:50.78]So what else is there to read?

[10:52.87]Well,he wrote books such as the First man in the Moon and The Time Machine.

[10:58.25]And the War of the World, about the aliens try to conquer the earth.

[11:02.54]I'd like to read I Robot,I've seen the movie,

[11:05.68]and I think the book would be very exciting.

[11:08.09]Can we read some science fiction about other topics?

[11:11.74]I mean not about technology or space.

[11:15.32]Sure,we can read Lao She's City of Cats in an English translation

[11:20.90]or other science fiction about social or political sciences.

[11:24.80]How about Fincstain by Merry Sharly? Is that a fantasier science fiction?

[11:30.01]What do you think?

[11:31.58]3.Listen to the tape again and discuss the following questions in pairs,

[11:36.62]using information from the listening text.

[11:45.42]Unit 13 The water planet

[11:49.65]Listening

[11:50.70]There are many poems about the ocean and the life of sailors and fishermen.

[11:55.18]One of the most famous English poems about life on the ocean

[11:58.97]tells the story of an adventurous sea journey.

[12:01.92]Listen to the story and answer the questions below.

[12:05.49]Part 1

[12:06.88]Many great poets have written about the beauty and dangers

[12:11.27]of the seas and oceans.

[12:13.23]In the 18th century, the English poet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge,

[12:18.50]wrote a poem called "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner".

[12:22.12]In the poem,a mysterious guest

[12:25.33]tells a strange story to the people at a wedding.

[12:29.05]He begins his story by describing how a ship sets out to sea.

[12:34.09]One day,one of the sailors,or mariners, shoots a bird that flies above the ship

[12:40.71]When the other mariners see what he has done,

[12:43.52]they are frightened and angry.

[12:45.86]The bird he is killed is a bird that brings good luck to the ship.

[12:49.87]By killing the bird, the mariner has brought bad luck.

[12:53.98]and death to the sailors.

[12:55.98]Soon,things turn bad the wind dies down and sailors are hungry and thirsty.

[13:02.89]There's water all around them but they can't drink it.

[13:06.46]Because it is too salty.

[13:08.37]"Water,water everywhere. Not any drop to drink."

[13:12.76]The mariners are so thirsty, hungry and frightened

[13:16.25]that they begin to imagine things,

[13:18.61]they think they see monsters walking on the water.

[13:22.44]Part 2

[13:23.84]In the poem,two gods

[13:26.52]argue over what should happen to the ship and mariners.

[13:30.01]Finally,they decide that all must die

[13:33.18]except the mariner who shot the bird. He must live through it all

[13:37.83]and will pay by having to tell the story to all the people he meets

[13:42.22]the rest of his life

[13:43.92]On the ship, the frightened mariner watches

[13:47.01]as the other sailors fall down dead on the ship's deck.

[13:50.73]Left alone on the ship, drifting on the ocean

[13:54.43]the mariner suffers from loneliness and fear.

[13:57.88]"Alone,alone, all, all alone. Alone on a wide wide sea!"

[14:04.35]When the mariner is rescued at last,he must walk around and tell his story.

[14:09.25]This is what the Guest tells the people at the wedding.

[14:12.26]His story told, the ancient mariner says farewell,

[14:15.54]and asks them to learn from his sufferings.

[14:23.16]Workbook Unit 13

[14:26.34]LISTENING

[14:27.51]1.Listen to part 1 of the tape.

[14:30.37]Tick the things which the speaker talks about.

[14:33.09]In order to go diving, you need some equipment.

[14:35.92]First,divers carry on their backs a metal bottle which is filled with air.

[14:40.84]There is enough air to last about 40 minutes.

[14:43.79]Next,divers carry heavy metal weights in a belt around their body.

[14:49.13]Without this heavy weights, they would flow to the surface.

[14:52.59]You see, there is a lot of air in their air bottles.

[14:55.68]and this will bring them up to the surface

[14:57.97]if they didn't have any weights.

[14:59.73]Most divers don't go very deep, mainly, they dive to a depth about 20 meters.

[15:05.80]Then they swim around as they slowly return to the surface.

[15:09.63]Everyone who wants to dive, must first have diving lessons with a teacher.

[15:14.33]There are a few dangers that you have to learn about.

[15:16.76]For one thing, you might have problems with your air bottle

[15:19.71]A diver must know how the equipment works

[15:22.20]and be able to recognize possible problems.

[15:25.09]There are also dangers of types of fish that you must look out for.

[15:29.08]You must be familiar with the environment you would be diving in.

[15:32.35]Before you go on a dive, make sure that you know what you would get into.

[15:36.43]Diving may look easy But if you don' t have the necessary training,

[15:40.54]it can be both difficult and dangerous.

[15:44.34]2.Listen to part 1 of the tape again.

[15:48.21]Fill in the information on the diagram.

[15:51.05]4.Listen to part 2 of the tape.

[15:54.33]According to Victoria, what must a diver always remember?

[15:58.58]Complete the chart below with information from the tape.

[16:02.27]Victoria is a diving instructor at the water sports club.

[16:05.86]She teaches people the skills they need in order to enjoy safe diving.

[16:10.08]We ask her what she tells her students.

[16:12.26]"I love diving, and I want others to try it too."

[16:16.01]Diving isn't really a dangerous sport

[16:18.95]but it's important to understand that safety is very important.

[16:22.96]Most diving accidents happen to beginning divers.

[16:26.38]I tell people to know their limits. If you don't have enough experience,

[16:31.65]you mustn't dive deeper or longer than what you were used to.

[16:36.07]There are two things a diver must always remember.

[16:40.04]Never dive alone, and don't hold your breath.

[16:43.88]If a diver holds his or her breath,

[16:46.98]the pressure difference between the air in their lungs and the outside

[16:51.99]may become so great that it may result in serious lung injuries

[16:57.38]I sometimes tell beginning divers to sing a song while diving.

[17:01.89]This is a simply way to make sure that you are breathing normally.

[17:06.25]And since many people dive while they are on vacation

[17:09.87]I remind them that they shouldn't dive within 12 hours of a flight.

[17:14.68]The difference in pressure may cause dangerous gases to enter the blood.

[17:25.63]Unit 14 Freedom fighters

[17:40.64]Signed the paper, that gave hope to millions of Negro slaves in 1863.

[17:46.53]But one hundred years later,as Dr King said,

[17:50.25]we still had to face the fact that the Negro was not free.

[17:54.25]He said,one hundred years later,

[17:56.87]the Negro still lives on a lonely island of the poor,

[18:00.45]in the middle of vast ocean of the rich.

[18:18.70]Then he spoke his famous words:I say to you today,my friends,

[18:23.49]that I still have a dream.

[18:25.57]It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

[18:28.52]I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia,

[18:32.26]The sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners,

[18:36.31]would be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood

[18:40.09]I have a dream that my four children,

[18:42.49]will one day live in a country where they will not

[18:45.02]be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

[18:49.24]He also said, that he hoped that one day the leader of the state,

[18:53.77]whose lips were dripping with promises,

[18:56.44]would make it possible for little black boys and black girls

[19:00.35]to join hands with little white boys and white girls

[19:04.06]and walk together as sisters and brothers

[19:07.46]And if America is to be a great nation,he said, that had to become true.

[19:15.70]Let freedom ring from the mighty mountain of New York

[19:19.21]Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia.

[19:22.37]Let freedom ring from every hill. From every mountain side let freedom ring.

[19:27.86]When we let freedom ring,

[19:29.52]when we let it ring from every village and every town,

[19:32.48]from every state and every city,

[19:34.80]We would be to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro song:

[19:39.79]Free at last, free at last.Thank God, we are free at last.

[22:05.45]I couldn't vote until the late 60s.

[22:08.45]What about the Montgomery bus boycott?

[22:11.50]We were always treated the same as Rosa Park on buses

[22:15.49]anywhere in the south.

[22:16.83]Most of us had to ride the buses.

[22:19.13]We bought a ticket in front of the bus

[22:21.50]and then we were onto the back door to get in.

[22:24.68]A sign marked with the white section ended

[22:27.43]and the black section begin.

[22:29.52]Even worse was when some of the whites would get up,

[22:33.31]some drivers would refuse to move the signs back up

[22:36.83]so that we could have more room and that few more of us could sit down.

[22:41.91]3.Listen to the tape again and answer the following questions.

[22:52.68]Unit 15 Destinations

[22:55.99]LISTENING

[22:57.21]1.Listen to Part 1 and fill in the missing information below.

[23:02.37]It started as a game.

[23:04.19]We'd sit together after dinner and talk about what we' d do,

[23:07.60]if we could travel anywhere we wanted.

[23:07.76]Then one day the game became reality,

[23:12.47]Jennifer told us that she had been chosen,

[23:15.09]by a TV station to take part in a competition.

[23:18.28]She needed our help. Four teams of three people would compete

[23:22.39]and the winners would receive a free vacation.

[23:25.29]The rules were simple. Each team had to decide, where they wanted to go.

[23:30.61]Each team could visit only three places.

[23:32.98]To win the competition,

[23:34.68]the team had to choose interesting destinations,

[23:37.46]and give good reasons for its choices.

[23:39.94]We couldn't wait to get started,we decided to meet next week

[23:43.92]and share ideas.

[23:45.82]2.Listen to part 2 and use the information on the tape

[23:50.68]to complete the role cards below.

[23:53.15]We met again after for about a week.

[23:55.14]Andrew and Emily each had a plan.

[23:57.57]And Jennifer would decide which one she thought was the best

[24:01.28]Andrew was first, Here's what he said: My plan is simply and clear,

[24:05.84]I think we should go on a trip to learn history.

[24:08.22]I think we should go to Greece,Iraq and Mexico.

[24:11.62]Greece is a great place to start.

[24:13.77]Because it is one of the oldest civilisations in the world.

[24:16.64]It used to have the best art and literature,

[24:19.14]and it also is the place where the Olympic Games began.

[24:22.11]The grand temples and other buildings are still there for us to admire.

[24:27.07]Our next stop should be Iraq, the sight of another ancient civilisation.

[24:31.57]The museums there have kept a lot of valuable cultural relics

[24:35.74]from its long history.

[24:37.32]Iraq is also where people think the hanging gardens

[24:40.92]One of the seven wonders of the world once were.

[24:44.15]Finally,we stop in Mexico.

[24:46.10]Where we can see the amazing culture relics left behind

[24:49.45]by the ancient Maya civilisation.

[24:51.60]Many of the old buildings have survived.

[24:54.02]Including the famous Sun Temple, the history of the Maya is also a mystery.

[24:59.31]No body knows why they suddenly disappeared.

[25:02.03]If we go on this trip,we can learn about history and culture

[25:05.66]and see a lot of beautiful places at the same time.

[25:08.71]Emily had a different plan.

[25:10.81]Here is what she said.

[25:12.14]My plan is to go on a nature trip.

[25:15.43]We'll see the best of nature, the trip is exciting, adventurous

[25:20.82]and not too expensive.

[25:22.55]I think that we should go to the Brazil,

[25:25.20]The South Pacific and Greenland. In Brazil we will visit the rainforest.

[25:30.76]The rainforest is full of strange and beautiful plants and animals

[25:35.47]that we've never seen in our life.

[25:37.36]Then our next stop is the South Pacific an island paradise.

[25:42.16]We can see the sea, enjoy the sun, have fun on the beach, and swim in the sea.

[25:49.42]Having experienced these hot places and hot weather,

[25:53.20]we would go to our last stop,Greenland.

[25:56.61]It is an area close to the north pole.

[25:59.54]Greenland is both cool and cold with ice and snow everywhere.

[26:04.60]My trip will take us from green to white from warm to cold

[26:09.73]and we can enjoy the mystery and beauty of nature.

[26:17.62]Workbook Unit 15

[26:35.13]There are so many destinations to choose from.

[26:37.63]I see.Well, first of all,how long do you want to stay in Europe?

[26:43.13]Errr...about two weeks.

[26:45.58]Emmm,two weeks. We do have two-week tours

[26:50.04]that include visits to some of the major cities in Europe.

[26:53.67]For example, the Discovered South tour, starts with three days in Paris,

[26:59.54]then two days in the south of France,

[27:02.59]Followed by two days in Spain and three days in Italy.

[27:07.50]Wow,that sounds exciting.I've heard so much about France and Italy.

[27:12.53]Where in Italy does the tour go?

[27:14.38]You would fly to Rome and spend two days there, then one day in Venice.

[27:19.77]Oh,Venice,that's such a romantic city.

[27:23.84]But that's only ten days, what about the other days?

[27:26.73]We usually arrange ten days, because you need two days to travel to Europe.

[27:31.97]The first day and the last day. That makes twelve days in all.

[27:36.79]2.Listen to part 2 and complete the tasks below.

[27:40.99]I'd like to know more about the activities.

[27:43.84]I like adventures not just sight-seeing.

[27:46.59]Do you have adventure travel tours?

[27:48.44]Yes,as a matter of fact we do.You can go hiking in the mountains in Spain.

[27:54.50]And ride a bike in Southern France.

[27:57.20]In Italy, you can go sailing or climb mountains.

[28:01.16]If you go in the winter, you can also go ski.

[28:04.88]Great!I'd like that.

[28:06.63]I'm interested in history and culture.

[28:09.41]Will we have a chance to learn something about that on the tour?

[28:12.69]Yes,you can visit museums in Rome and Madrid.

[28:16.46]We will arrange short visit to famous buildings,

[28:19.63]historical sights and other places of interest in Paris.

[28:23.65]Our tour guides are experts and can tell you about the history and culture

[28:29.07]of all the places we go to.

[28:30.89]There's even a class you can take as part of the tour.

[28:34.33]In Rome,Madrid and Paris the tour guide will teach you about the language,

[28:39.63]history and culture of the country.

[28:41.98]That sounds wonderful.
