The movie musical Chicago and the drama The Hours have taken top honors in Hollywood's Golden Globe awards. Martin Scorsese was named best director for Gangs of New York, while Jack 1 Nicholson was named best dramatic actor.

Chicago was named best musical or comedy, and Richard Gere and Renee Zellweger were honored for their starring roles in that story of murder in the 1920's "jazz age."

Richard Gere plays a tap-dancing lawyer in Chicago, which is based on a Broadway show. He said he was shocked to win the Golden Globe. "And, I didn't even want to do this movie," he said. "That's what I know."

The Hours was selected as best dramatic film and its star, Nicole Kidman, was named best dramatic actress for her role as the writer Virginia Woolf. Woolf's novel Mrs. Dalloway 1)resonates in the lives of two women in later eras.

"Mrs. Dalloway said she would buy the flowers herself."
"Mrs. Dalloway said she would buy the flowers herself."
"Sally, I think I'll buy the flowers myself."
Accepting the award, Nicole Kidman said the film had a difficult subject matter. She took note of other performances by actresses who have been nominated this year. "And I say to the writers, please keep writing for us because we're very interesting, and to the directors, please keep taking chances and giving us complicated rich characters to play," she said.

Jack Nicholson won the Golden Globe as best dramatic actor for his role in About Schmidt, a comic 2)tragedy in which he plays a lonely retiree. "Well, I don't know whether to be happy or ashamed because I thought we made a comedy," he said. "You know, I'm very proud of this and I'm always happy to be in a room full of such great 3)moviemakers."

Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper were honored for their supporting roles in Adaptation, a quirky comedy about screenwriting in Hollywood. Streep expressed surprise. She last won a Golden Globe 20 years ago, for the drama Sophie's Choice. She said she didn't expect to win this time. "I've just been nominated 789 times and I was getting so settled over there for a long winter's nap," she said.

Actor Harrison Ford 2 announced the winner of the Golden Globe for best director.

"Martin Scorsese", the director was honored for his epic 3 Gangs of New York, a tale of anti-immigrant clashes in the 19th-century. "This is a night for Americans," he said.

Director Scorsese said the movie fulfilled a longtime dream. "Maybe 'dream come true' is a cliché because cliché 4s are true," he said. "But it really is. I was seven years old when I heard the first stories about this time and it's taken about 40 some-odd years to get it done."

The Spanish drama Talk to Her, from director Pedro Almodovar, was named best foreign-language film. And, veteran actor Gene 5 Hackman received a special award for contributions to the field of entertainment.

The Golden Globes are presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and often point to winners at the Academy Awards, Hollywood's top honors, which are given out in March.
