The rift 1 between Federal Labor 2 and the Greens is widening after the government dropped a key part of its clean energy policy. It's pulling out of its plan to buy high polluting coal-fired power stations and shut them down. Greens leader Christine Milne says labor can no longer be trusted on the environment.
The Afghan government says hundreds of soldiers have been sacked or detained for having links with the Taliban. It comes amid international concern over the rising number of insider attacks on NATO troops. Yesterday the bodies of three Australian troops shot by their Afghan colleague were returned home.

A large earthquake has struck Costa Rica, the 7.9 magnitude quake was 20 kilometers below the surface near the Pacific coast. The tsunami 6 warning had been issued but it's since been canceled.
Syrian president Bashar al-Assad is under growing international pressure to step down. His government has been denounced at a meeting of Arab League foreign ministers. Turkey's prime minister says Syria has become a terrorist state. And Egypt's president says the time has come for an immediate 7 change.
