"No they didn't do, they did to the Y axis 1 then... ”
In Advanced Placement(1) Calculus 2, Tom Farber teaches problem solving. And at the beginning of the school year, he had one of his own. State budget cuts to education coupled with rising printing costs meant: the numbers weren't adding up.
I found there was no way I could pay for all the tests that I need to take with my budget. I mean, I need to get over the budget I have. So I had to come up with some other way.
His solution? Advertising 3. And so at back-to-school night, he unleashed 4 the plan on parents.
Public buses have billboards 5 all over them. You know , the, uh, so , it's not, I don’t think it's a completely new idea. I just spot it in the classroom setting; it might be a little bit difficult.
I stick to C. (oh)
Now on each test, there is a sponsor.
Well, there is Aircon Engineering and then there're Author Dante's.
I think it's kinda sad that we are gonna have to, like, you know, pay for our tests by sponsoring them, but I think it's a pretty good idea.
Farber says some parents chose to stay anonymous 6 and paid for an inspirational saying rather than advertising. He says this could be just the beginning.
Who knows? Students in Mr. Farber 's calculus class next year could be taking tests courtesy of(2) Starbucks, pop quizzes brought to them by McDonald's or finals sponsored by Nike--encouraging them to "Just Do It."
Farber says other teachers are showing interest.
Nobody's really gone as far as I have, really, printed anything out, but all teachers are asking parents for help.
And if education cuts keep coming? Look for the sponsors to keep adding up.
