Security was tight in Pakistan's capital on Monday after president Musharraf imposed emergency rule in the country. Police set barriers on all roads leading to the Supreme 1 Court and the judge's colony in an effort to prevent lawyers from protesting. The situation was tense on the streets as authorities checked vehicles. Athorities have arrested up to 500 political opponents and opposition 2 lawyers in what they say is a preventive measure.
Most Pakistanis say they believe Musharraf's main motive 3 in turning to emergency rule was to pre-empt the Supreme Court invalidating his reelection as president. The court was due to reconvene and determine Musharaff's right to stand for reelection while still being army chief.
But most judges including chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry have been sacked. He has been replaced by a Musharaff loyalist. Police are holding several judges at their homes after they refused to back the emergency rule.
Meanwhile outside the High Court in Karachi, tight security did not deter 4 lawyers from protesting. Reports say police scuffled with protesters as they chanted "go Musharraf, go" . The US embassy in Islamabad, called on the government to lift detention 5 orders on lawyers, politicians and rights activists 6. They also called to let broadcasters resume programming. Washington has given Islamabad around 10 billion dollars over the last 5 years. Despite sharp criticism from the international community, General Musharraf has cited spiralling militancy 7 and hostile judges to justify 8 his actions.
