Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore has announced he will run for re-election in the country's November presidential poll.  Mr. Campaore's party says if he wins it hopes to change the constitution so he can run again in 2015.

Compaore has officially accepted his party's offer to run once again, and his supporters said they want to continue the progress that has been made under Compaore's past leadership.  The president echoed these thoughts as he accepted the nomination 1.

"We have a country that has come far and needs more effort," he said.

Mr. Compaore first came to power in 1987 after an overthrow 2 of the government, during which then-president Thomas Sanakara was killed.  Compaore was elected president in 1991, when a restriction 3 of seven-year term limits was put in place.  That restriction was lifted six years later, however, and Mr. Compaore went on to win re-election in 1998 and again in 2005.

Currently the country's constitution limits the president to a five-year term.  Mr. Campaore's Congress for Democracy and Progress Party, though, said it will change the constitution to allow him to remain president if he wins in November.

President Compaore said he wants to make sure Burkina Faso continues to progress.  He said he has an opportunity to create even more possibilities for the men and women of his country.  He added he will soon share more details of these future plans for Burkina Faso.
