Grocery shopping will never be the same—in Hawaii at least.
On July 1, the state became the first in the US to ban plastic checkout bags, after Oahu joined the rest of the Hawaiian Islands in prohibiting them.
Although California was the first state to pass a law in 2014 prohibiting retailers 2 from handing out plastic bags to customers, the ban was put to a referendum after pro-plastic trade groups opposed the move.
