The Big Day Out is a Rock Music Festival that lasts 12 hours, starting at 11am tomorrow. It is held once a year towards the end of January in Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland and then in some of the bigger cities in Australia. There are about 40 acts. The cost in New Zealand is $158 but there are eight stages with a chance to hear many different bands and see different performances. Although many of the performers are international celebrities 1, there are also 27 local bands. There is a dance floor under cover of a big tent to protect from rain. Umbrellas are not allowed and sometimes it rains.
There have been problems in the past with drugs and alcohol 2. All bags are searched at the entrance. There is a quick entry for those people who don’t have a bag. No one under 15 is allowed to attend. Crowd control can also be a problem. About 45,000 people are expected.
The Big Day Out started in Auckland in 1994 and has become very popular.
