October 18th, 1931Inventor Thomas Edison dies in West Orange, New Jersey 1 at age 84. Among his many inventions --- the electric light bulb, the phonograph and the motion-picture camera. 1962,Three scientists are named winners of the Nobel Prize for Medicine, for their work in determining the double helix structure of DNA 2. Doctor James Watson of United States and Doctors Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins of Britain share the Nobel honor.
2001,CBS News announces an employee in Anchor Dan Rather's office in New York has tested positive for anthrax. It's part of the anthrax scare that kills five other people and shakes Americans, following the September 11th attacks.
Also in New York, that same year. Four disciples 3 of Al-Qaida leader Osama bin 4 Laden 5 are sentenced to life without parole for their roles in the deadly 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in East Africa.
1968,Two American athletes are suspended for a high-profile protest at the Mexico City Olympics. Sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos give black power salutes 6 during a medal ceremony. The athletes are later banned from all Olympic competition for life.
And 1926,Rock n' roll performer Chuck Berry is born in Saint Louis, Missouri.
