Mass demonstrations 2 mirroring the so-called "Occupy" demonstrations in the United States have been sweeping 3 across major world cities this weekend.

CRI's Su Yi has the details.

The protests around the world come, in part, in response to calls from the demonstrators in New York.

The biggest protest has taken place in Rome, where tens of thousands took to the streets against corporate 4 greed.

However, rioters hijacked 5 the peaceful demonstration 1, smashing windows, tearing up sidewalks and torching vehicles.

Meanwhile, in New York, police have arrested dozens of protesters gathered in Times Square.

"We are out here as citizens, we are out here as women, and we are here to talk with, to learn more from other people who are frustrated 6 with the system, with this system that's imposing 7 on us."

"The rich are getting richer while the poor are sitting down, and what I'm going to do is write "occupying" over it, because the poor can't do anything but go and talk about their views, they don't have any money, the banks have taken it from them, somebody has taken it from them."

Over 170 protesters in Chicago and nearly 50 in Phoenix 8 have also been arrested.

In London, up to 200 demonstrators have pitched tents in the shadow of St Paul's Cathedral, about 100 meters from the London Stock Exchange.

The activists 9 are using a small camcorder to stream the occupation live to thousands of viewers across the globe.

"Enormous interest, talking to people from America, Spain, Madrid. Stuff like that, people we are occupying their cities themselves. And just coming on line and showing them clips, and see how things going, and how things go from their ends."

The protests now appear to have reached their highest level of organization and public relation.

While the demonstrations in the United States have attracted a lot of attention, many pundits 10 have been critical of their organization, saying they don't have a clear and definable message.

For CRI, I'm Su Yi.
