Metallica是1981年在美国洛杉矶组建的重金属乐队，与Anthrax, Slayer 1以及 Megadeth并成为鞭笞金属四巨头，至今在美国共有五千七百万张专辑销量，全球超过一亿张专辑销量，是当今最为成功最有影响力的摇滚乐队之一。

Metallica是由主唱兼吉他手James Hetfield和鼓手Lars Ulrich于1981年在美国加利弗利亚开始组建,之后在The Recycler杂志上发广告,招募贝斯手和主音吉他,后来招到贝斯手Ron McGovney,并且有多名吉他手前来试听,比如Lloyd Grant 2, Brad Parker和Jeff Warner,但都没有进入乐队,乐队前期还缺少一个强力的主音吉他手.乐队名Metallica是由Lars取得,此前Lars的一位朋友Ron Quintana要创办摇滚杂志,拿出一列备选杂志让Lars建议一个,其中就有一个名字叫Metallica,Lars建议用Metal Mania或Hesse,而后来Lars则用Metallica作为乐队的名字.
Metallica早期创作灵感来自Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Diamond Head, Saxon,Thin Lizzy, Mercyful Fate以及其他乐队,并且还受一些朋克乐队影响,例如the Misfits, Zeroption和The Ramones以及英国Hardcore乐队Discharge.
