Fish is now the most traded animal commodity on the planet. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, or FAO, estimates 140 million tons of wild and farmed fish were sold in 2004. The FAO reports that stocks in European seas have dwindled 1 even as consumer appetites grow in the world's largest market for fish.
Some environmental groups say the shortfall fuels illegal or pirate fishing on the open seas. And the European Commission admits it fails to prevent illegal fish from entering the EU. From London, Catherine Drew reports for VOA.
