American tennis player Andy Roddick has given the United States a 1-0 lead over Russia in the Davis Cup tennis finals by beating Dmitry Tursunov in Portland, Oregon.
Roddick fired 25 aces 1 and had only four double faults to beat Tursunov in three sets, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. The sixth-ranked American improved to 6-0 in Davis Cup play this year.
The second match features No. 13 James Blake of the United States taking on Mikhail Youzhny of Russia.
The doubles are Saturday when top-ranked Bob and Mike Bryan of the United States take on Nikolay Davydenko and Igor Andreev of Russia. The reverse singles are Sunday.
The United States has won a record 31 Davis Cup titles, but has not captured the trophy 2 since 1995, when Pete Sampras led the U.S. team to victory on clay in Moscow.
