Metallica于1981年在洛山矶组建，包括James Hetfield(主唱/旋律吉他)，Lars Ulrich(鼓手)，Dave Mustaine(吉他)和Ron McGovney(贝斯)。这只四人组合为1982年发行的专辑《Metal Massacre 1 1》录制了四首歌，另为《No Life 'Til Leather.》录制了四首歌，很快拥有了乐迷。1983时乐队迁至三藩市，与Megaforce Records公司签约， Cliff Burton代替了McGovney，前 Exodus乐队的Kirk Hammet代替了Mustaine。五月，新乐队发行了《Kill 'Em All》，(原标题《Metal Up Your Ass》)。与Venom 2合作的欧洲巡回演出结束后， Metallica 于1984年发行《Ride the Lightning》，风格更加复杂，并吸引了更多的乐迷。
