Israeli police say at least 15 people are dead and nearly 90 injured after an explosion 1)ripped through a restaurant in Jerusalem Thursday. Medical officials say at least five of the dead are children.
Israeli police said a suicide bomber 1 struck a popular pizza restaurant on the corner of one of Jerusalem's busiest 2)intersections. The inside of the restaurant, which was crowded with people eating lunch, was gutted 2 by the 3)blast.
Victims covered with blood were loaded into 4)ambulances, while 5)stunned 6)witnesses sat crying on the sidewalk along a street 7)littered with glass and 8)debris.
Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert blamed the bombing on Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. "We have war with the Palestinian leadership, and those who are in charge of the terrorist actions, and they should be held accountable. We should reach out for them and kill them," he said.
The Reuters news agency 9)quoted Mr. Arafat as condemning 3 the bombing and all acts that harm civilians 4.
The militant 5 Islamic Jihad group claimed responsibility for the blast, saying it was in response to targeted attacks against Palestinian militants 6 by the Israeli military.
