1978. Pope Paul VI dies in Castel Gandolfo, Italy at age eighty. His successor Pope John Paul I dies after thirty-three days as pontiff. He is followed by Pope John Paul II.
1881. Alexander Flemming, the scientist behind the discovery of the antibiotics 4 agent—Penicillin, is born in Lochfield, Scotland.
