Dialogue 1.


W: Mr. Green’s office. May I help you?


M: Yes. My name is John Smith. And I’d like to speak to Mr. Green, please.


W: One moment please. I’ll put you through.


M: Thanks.


Dialogue 2.


M: Hello?


W: Hello. Can I speak to Mr. Smith, please?


M: I am sorry, he is not here. Can I take a message?


W: Yes, please tell him that Mary called. It’s urgent.


Dialogue 3.


W: Operator. Can I help?


M: I am calling from a pay phone in west highlight. I’ve been trying to get through to a number for the past 15 minutes. But I keep getting a funny noise.


W: Are you sure it’s the right number, sir?


M: Yes, I have checked in the telephone book. Are the lines overloaded 1?


W: What kind of sound are you getting?


M: A continuous Bee Bing sound. And I can’t get a right dialing tone.


W: Ah, that explains it then. We’ve been having trouble with your area because of crossed lines. One moment and I’ll try and get the number for you.


Dialogue 4.


W: Hello. I’d like to speak to Mr. Wang.


M: What number are you calling?


W: I’d like to speak to Mr. Wang at 2345145.


M: Sorry, there is no one here by that name.


W: Oh, sorry for troubling you.


Dialogue 5.


W: Hello, overseas operator. May I help you sir?


M: Yes, I am going to call LA sometime next week and I’d like to find out the time difference and charges.


W: The time difference between LA and Beijing is 16 hours. The charges vary according to the types of calls you make. The cheapest is a station to station call, then a person to person call, the mini charge will apply for the first 3 minutes, then each additional minute will be charged.


M: Will you quote the charge?


W: Yes, if you notify the operator when you place a call.
