Mourning the loss of the leader along with their hope for the future, thousands gathered at the funeral of Pakistani politician Benazir Bhutto who was assasinated at an election rally in Rawalpindi on thursday. Butto's husband acocompanied his wife's / closed / coffin 1 which was draped in the green red and black tricolor of her Pakistani People's Party.

The opposition 2 leader was laid to rest next to her father at the family's mausoleum in Sindh Province. The spokesman for the country's interior ministry 3 said emotions across the country were high after her death.

"She was a great leader and she was a national figure. And the whole nation is mourning, you know. It's a very horrendous 4 tragedy that had struck Pakistan. And we are taking every possilbe measure that , to ensure, to maintain law and order."

Although no group has claimed responsibility for her death, government officials say evidence indicate Al-Qaeda carried out the assasination.
Butto returned home from 8 years of self-imposed exile in october, hoping her huge following among the poor would make her prime minister for a 3rd time. plans for a general election on 8th of January remain in place. the poll is meant to pave the return of democracy after 8 years of military rule.
