WHO Official: Ebola Vaccine 1 Could Be in Use by January 世卫组织:埃博拉疫苗最早明年1月开始接种
The World Health Organization said an experimental Ebola vaccine could be available by January.
Dr. Marie Paule Kieny, the WHO assistant director, said that trials, or tests, of the vaccines 2 are to take place soon in Europe, the United States, and Africa.
Dr. Kieny spoke 3 to reporters in Geneva, Switzerland, Tuesday. She said if the vaccines were considered safe, there could be a trial in West Africa by next January. The trial would include tens of thousands of individual vaccine treatments.
Dr. Kieny did not say when an Ebola vaccine might be widely available.
Hong Kong protesters not satisfied with reform talks
Student protest leaders in Hong Kong have held their first talks with government officials. However, the activists 4 said they were not satisfied with the results of the talks.
The student leaders said government officials did not address their main concern. That is the structure of the 2017 Hong Kong elections. They met with Carrie Lam, the Chief Secretary for Administration. She asked them to end the three-week-old protests. Ms. Lam also told them there might be a chance for change in the future. The official did not give details.
The talks were broadcast live Tuesday, and shown on several large screens at demonstration 5 sites in the city. Student leaders have not yet decided 6 whether to hold more talks.
North Korea releases American prisoner
North Korea has release American Jeffrey Fowle from prison. It continues to hold two other Americans.
U.S. officials said Tuesday that Mr. Fowle had left North Korea and was on his way home. North Korean police arrested him earlier this year after he left a Bible in a North Korean restaurant. He never went to trial, however.
The U.S. State Department said it welcomed Mr. Fowle’s release. And it said the U.S. government will continue to work for the release of Americans Matthew Miller 7 and Kenneth Bae.
The two were detained in separate cases, tried and found guilty. They are both serving prison sentences.
Pistorius Sentenced to Five Years in Prison
South African Olympian Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to five years in prison for the deadly shooting of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
The runner shot and killed Ms. Steenkamp at his home in February 2013. He told a South African court that the shooting was a mistake. He said he thought his girlfriend was an intruder.
