1980年The Runaways解散，Jett来到纽约开始个人发展。在经纪人兼制作人Kenny Laguna的协助下，Jett独立发行了以她自己的名字命名的个人专辑，因为没有唱片公司对她感兴趣。这张唱片和比较朋克化的Runaways相比是一张相当传统的rock & roll唱片，但却保持了以前那种挑衅性的态度。唱片的销售结果对于独立发行来讲相当不错，这引起了Boardwalk唱片公司的注意，他们以《Bad Reputation》之名再版了这张专辑，最终在美国专辑榜上名列第51。
在《Bad Reputation》发行后Jett成立了the Blackhearts乐队，1981年，Jett以Joan Jett & The Blackhearts之名推出了第二张专辑《I Love Rock-n-Roll》，这是她的辉煌时刻，也是八十年代重摇滚的开场白，专辑名列Top10，单曲“I Love Rock-n-Roll”成为一代摇滚礼赞
