[00:11.45]Right, today I'm going to talk abut 2 Mars,
[00:14.30]the "red planet".
[00:16.05]Mars, named after the Roman god of war,
[00:18.53]is called the Red Planet because,
[00:20.38]as you can see in this photo,
[00:22.10]it actually looks red.
[00:23.68]But Mars is not only an extremely
[00:25.58]beautiful planet.For a long time this question
[00:28.71]has interested us-"Is there life on Mars?"
[00:32.75]Well, first I'd like to talk
[00:34.54]about the planet itself.
[00:36.26]In many ways, Mars is our next-door neighbour.
[00:40.02]Venus is actually nearer
[00:41.57]but has a very tough environment,
[00:43.57]covered in clouds of poisonous gas
[00:46.20]and with temperatures of up to 500C.
[00:50.67]Mars is cooler, has an atmosphere made up
[00:53.84]of carbon dioxide and its gravity
[00:56.64]is a third of that on Earth.
[00:58.62]Mars has two moons,and its surface is covered
[01:02.38]with valleys and huge volcanoes.
[01:04.89]The valleys were probably made
[01:06.47]in the past by water on the planet.
