In October of 1966, in Oakland California, Huey Newton and Bobby Seale founded the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense 8. The New Black Panther Party for Self Defense takes its name from the original Black Panther Party. Despite the collapse 17, the group's mystique continued to influence radicals 18, and by the early 1990s a new generation of militant activists 19 began to model themselves after the original Panthers.
